Pornography Time Statistics
Every second - $3,075.64 is being spent on pornography
Every second - 28,258 Internet users are viewing pornography
Every second - 372 Internet users are using search engines to find porn
Every 39 minutes: a new pornographic video is being created in the US
This may not come as a shock to you but these statistics were compiled in 2006 and the numbers have more than quadrupled since then. It is then I asked myself, are we as humans so fascinated with pornography that it has become an addiction? While I was pondering on my findings I thought to myself - there must be some numbers I can find to help me paint the picture of just how large this industry is and alas.
In 2005 consumers spent US$4.28 billion (with a "B") on pornographic video sales and rentals. In 2006 however they only spent US$3.62 billion on videos. Does that mean people were just watching less pornography? Couldn't be further from the truth - in 2005 consumers spent US$2.5 billion on internet pornography and in 2006 US$2.84 billion. What was happening is that more people were discovering an easier and more discreet way of accessing their favorite types of pornography.
I don't want to bore you with a bunch of statistics but I can tell you this - In 2005 the Porn Industry grossed US$12.62 billion and in 2006 US$13.33 billion. What is even more interesting is that the porn industry has found many ways to adapt to it's environment and move with the times. Pornography has moved from being shown in old broken down movie theaters in seedy parts of town to the internet and on mobile devices like cell phones and touch pads.
People have more access to pornography now more than ever and on top of all of that - the industry continues to innovate and find ways to keep people hooked.
I have a few questions to ask you (my most awesome readers), but first I want to give you a few more statistics:
Average Age of first internet exposure to pornography 11 Years Old
Largest Consumer of Internet pornography 35-49 age group
Men admitting to accessing pornography at work 20%
U.S, adults who visit porn sites regularly 40 million
Christians saying porn is a problem in their home 47%
Adults admitting to Internet sexual addiction 10%
Male vs. Female visitors 2% M 28% F
Women keeping their porn cyber activities secret 70%
Women struggling with porn addiction 17%
Percentage of visitors to adult websites who are women 1 in 3 visitors
Women accessing adult websites each month 9.4 million
Women admitting to accessing porn at work 13%
Now all of that being said - it is evident that pornography isn't going anywhere... many people in the world have watched, will watch or continue to watch pornography - Someone is watching pornography as you read this article....
Now the question I have for you is this....If you were unemployed or under employed and looking for a way to make big bucks fast (legally) and a porn executive offered you a job to work for his company - would you? It could be as an administrator, a camera holder, a lighting expert, music technician or an actual porn star.....knowing what you know now - would you consider it?

Mr. Dawkins what a great and thought provoking conversation. The statistics that you brought forward were rather interesting. It would love to see the statistics for 2010. The most interesting point brought forward was the concept of "adapting to it's environment". Survival of the fittest displayed to the fullest. Other industries could take a note from them. If the automotive industry had adapted with the times the way that the porn industry has maybe they would never of needed a bail out from the federal government.
ReplyDeleteDespite what people might believe and think of porn and the industry as a whole. They consistently re-invent themselves and conform to the lastest trends to stay relevant. The porn isn't one to be left behind in this digital revolution. It's true what they say sex sells and it's obvious by the numbers brought forward in the article.
There has always been a market for sex but the misconception that it's a male driven industry is slowly being peeled away. Women more than ever are partaking in the sex industry "consumption". As more and more women become open and "come out of the CLOSET" I think we will find that the industry is actually sustained by female dominance.
In conclusion the question that was posed at the end of the article, would you work in the sex industry in any capacity? It's for me to know and you to figure out...
I agree that the industry itself isn't going anywhere but does it automatically follow that there is job security within the industry? I would imagine there is fierce competition in the field. I mean if you are a male porn star and....you....ahhh..."underperform" once or twice I can see you getting the boot because there are so many other people jumping at the opportunity. As for the women in the industry. I guess their jobs are stable once they don't pass 25 years old, gain more than 5lbs or decide to have a baby.
ReplyDeleteMaybe the more job stable aspects of the porn industry are the administration and production sides. One thing is for sure... that industry isn't going ANYWHERE!
Would I work in porn whether behind the cameras or otherwise? NOPE
The industry will never ever go away. It plays or run accordance with people's innate/subconscious want or need for sex. The female figures were surprising to me, seeing as though many of them give off prudish or innocent behavior of not ever seeing porn (should have known better).
ReplyDeleteWith the new wave of technology now, i think the figures would remain the same or have slight increases or decreases after a time.
Would i work in multi billion dollar porn industry in any position (no pun intended) or capacity if i was unemployed and broke? Heck yea, need to put food my tummy. I would be an administrator, i don't need to be seeing that stuff with others around within a step to the left or right.
While it is a recession proof industry the introduction of "free porn" and "amateur porn" has negatively affected the porn industry. Fetish will always be a staple because it is often non-sexual acts being viewed in a sexual way. I would not ever even consider being part of porn in an acting way but you can't say that there are not niches that one could get into if you chose to. You could do it straight from your house with your partner or even by yourself, there is a market for watching people masturbate. Porn for women has become a large market as well as fetish porn. I think the biggest issue is around free porn. Anyone with an iphone or itouch can see decent porn for free, if that is the case, you get your rocks off for free or can chose to subscribe for only $1. That type of sell can't be beat.... I don't know what is going to happen but I think eventually it will implode... On a side note - I often think of how easy it is for younger teens and children to get access to porn simply because they have a smart phone.....a % of those kids are going to become addicted and by the time anyone finds out the child will be oversexed and their natural sexual progressions will have been stunted. Now adays children are doing very grown up acts at an alarmingly young age simply because they try to emulate what they see and what they think others value in those acts...it is not cute for a 12 year old to give head or take it up the butt... something to think about..
